Joe Beddia, the iconoclastic Philadelphia chef and maker of what Bon Appetit Magazine named "America's Best Pizza," is stepping out of the kitchen to partner with Lapstone & Hammer on a tee shirt capsule inspired by some of his favorite wines. The Lapstone x Beddia "Wine Shirts" pairs a concept Joe created over a decade ago with Lapstone's proprietary hand-dye technique to create a range of short and long sleeve tees that are as unique and satisfying as a Beddia pie (well... almost).
Lapstone founder Brain Nadav has been searching for a way to collaborate with his friend and favorite pizza maker for many years now, which finally came to fruition when Joe decided to revive his old wine shirt designs. In fact, I'll just let the man himself explain the project:
"I started making these wine shirts in my late twenties (almost 15 years ago! Woof). Then my longtime friend and neighbor, Brian from Lapstone and Hammer, suggested a collaboration with some of his amazing tie dyes for a limited run. I hope you find these as fun as I do!
The Grosses Gewächs is a fun one that we kept plain. I’ve been obsessed lately with German Rieslings and the GG is for their grand cru vineyards.
Nero D’Avola is the great red grape of Sicily where half of my family is from. I’ve wanted to do this one for a while.
And the Blanc de Blancs is a favorite Champagne style made with only the Chardonnay grape. Clean and crispy. Wish I was sipping some right now as I write this."
The capsule includes the Blanc de Blanc "Rainbow" long sleeve tee, finished in a multi-color version of our proprietary hand-dye process; the Nero D'Avola "Wine Spill" short sleeve tee, in a tonal purple hand dye inspired by the look of actual wine spills; and the Grosses Gewachs in a garment-dyed black with neon lettering. Each shirt is made from 100% heavyweight cotton and they all feature names of Joe's favorite wines printed in his iconic handwritten block lettering made famous on the Pizzeria Beddia sign and his Pizza Camp cookbook (which makes a great holiday gift btw...).
